Motorcycle insurance differs a bit from auto insurance. When you’re buying insurance for your motorcycle, it’s important to understand what your options are so you can get the maximum benefit from the insurance you purchase. Below is a description of some types of coverage you can get for your motorcycle.

Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability

Bodily injury and property damage liability insurance covers you against damage or injuries you cause to anyone else. How much you are covered for will depend on the limit you select for your policy. This coverage is required of all motorcyclists, though minimum coverage limits vary by state.

Collision and Comprehensive

Combined, these two types of no-fault coverage are intended to pay for replacement or repair of your motorcycle. If your bike is damaged during an accident, collision insurance covers repairs. If it’s stolen, vandalized or damaged by a storm, fire or similar event, comprehensive insurance comes into play. There will generally be a deductible that you will have to pay, with the insurance company paying the remainder.

Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist

If you’re in an accident with someone else who doesn’t have enough insurance or doesn’t have insurance at all, you might think that you’re out of luck. But by having uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, any damages or injuries you suffer resulting from the accident (such as medical care or lost wages) can be covered.

Medical Payments

No matter who was at fault, medical payments coverage handles any medical expenses you have resulting from a motorcycle accident. This will usually cover any necessary treatment taking place within the first few years following the accident. In certain states, this coverage will only come into play once you have used up any other medical insurance you might have.
